The Diaper Service

It is no secret to everyone that I consider the 50’s and 60’s to be the best years to have lived in, thanks to all the inventions that made life easier without having to live in the hurried mad race that the world became after those decades. Well, the diaper service is one of those advantages of the modern life that made life easier for women back then. Even though this service started in the 30’s it was very well used by the 50’s women. I find it amazing that the diaper service still exists now days. Especially after all the technological advances for the home like the washer and dryer. Also you would think that after the invention of the disposable diaper this service would be extinct but it’s still standing. Here is a little bit of the history of this particular company that has been victorious in the diaper service for over 70 years. http://www.dy-dee.com/html/about_us.html Good for them! When a good idea is supported with hard work; surpasses all odds!

When I see vintage pictures of the 50’s and 60’s something happens inside of me. Not only I get nostalgic because everything looks so good and I would like to get my hands on that furniture but also I think it must had been amazing when they lived here and had a wonderful time in a relaxed fulfilling life. I was watching a tv show a few weeks back; about a cooking competition that took place in the house of non other than Mr. Frank Sinatra. Wow! I thought! Not only he is a legend in music but now also his estate is being offered to be rented by anybody who wants to have an event there. So I googled it and sure enough I found that you can rent his awesome home for anything you want. Can you imagine the energy in that place? I get chills just thinking about all the great times that those walls must had seen. I can’t stop thinking about how much I would love to go there and play pretend like when I was a little girl and I used to get all dressed up pretending I was a princess or that I was going to parties dressed up as a woman with my mom’s high hills. Now of course; since I am a woman I don’t have to pretend that part but I would like to dress up in 50’s clothing and I would like to pretend to be Frank Sinatra’s guest. Oh, how much I would have liked to see him having a great time, singing and dancing in his own living room! So, here is the link to his home; we can all dream and delight ourselves by looking at this amazing piece of architecture http://www.sinatrahouse.com/2010/08/vintage-photos-of-twin-palms-estate/

The revival of the vanities!

The revival of the vanities! As our lives get more complicated, accelerated and tight; we revolve around TV time and shows. Our homes have become small places and we find ourselves having to get smart about the pieces of furniture we buy. It is no longer a matter of we have a house and we have to fill it up with every piece of furniture that we can imagine. Now we have to get the most out of the items that we can comfortably fit in our homes; style, function and design go into account when you buy something that is going to take some square footage in your home. That being said; the vanity is no longer a piece just for women to put their make up on. The vanity is being moved from the bedroom into other areas of our home and it is being transformed to the piece that we place our TV and games on in our living rooms or a very functional entrance piece, etc. We have noticed how they have great design, how someone thought about that piece’s style and how attractive it should be; and we can now take advantage of the looks and functionality of such great piece and apply it to enjoy them in the common areas of the home. Believe it or not they are versatile pieces; like the ones designed by Russel Wright or Heywood Wakefield or Paul Goldman can be used as desks and vanities. The low ones with the big long mirrors can be used in an entrance of a home (instead of the classic half round table) as a place to put your purse, keys and jacket on by the door. Over the years I have sold quite a few knowing that the owners had the intension of making them one of the focal points of their living rooms and since they vary so much in heights, style and designs they can be as plain or as sexy as you want them to be. So be sure to get one for yourself and put your creative side to work by using it to its full potential in the rooms that the whole family can enjoy!

Adrian Pearsall room

As I have mentioned several times before; I get so excited when I get feedback from my customers but it is a particularly happy occasion when those customers who are deeply involved collectors of Mid Century Modern send me pictures of how with our pieces they completed the look of a room. In the case of the most recent photos I received, the homeowners decided to redo the whole sun room with Adrian Pearsall pieces, the chairs are exquisite and the coffee table was bought at Gre-stuff. As it is obvious in the pictures the home owners have great taste and a great commitment to collecting Mid Century Modern furniture and accessories. They have placed the coffee table they bought from us in the middle of the room accenting and complimenting the entire collection.
To be the focal point of this room they have chosen a great red wine color sofa, the accent chairs are just wonderful. Clean lines, sexy curves and well designed furniture pieces make this room AMAZING! We are so happy to be able to be part of your home so we raise our glasses and give our congratulations to the home owners; they have done an incredible job collecting, decorating and bringing pieces to life.

Vintage means; vintage!

I have a question floating inside my head since a few days ago. A lot of our customers ask us about the history of the pieces that we are offering, so I wonder do they really want something vintage with all its great history? And, mainly I ask myself this because some and I clarify and emphasize; some, only some of the people who buy vintage furniture just want the name “vintage” and the great stories that go with the items but none of the wear that goes as default with those pieces. Some collectors want the piece in mint condition, no squeaking, no little marks and tiny rips or anything. Most of us want the history, the looks, the scratches, discolorations and etc that a vintage piece involves.
Maybe it is just difficult for a consumer society to realize how great it is that those pieces are in front of them; and that they have survived a lifetime and I mean a lifetime (40-60years) of parties, daily use, raised a family and lots of cleaning, dusting, vacuuming etc.
It is understandable that you want pieces in good usable condition; pieces that can be part of your personal collection for a lot of years but to me personally it is definitely a must to have some wear, some patina that can tell me the story of that piece without having to ask for it. I love when a desk has that dark area where someone put their hands for years maybe writing checks to pay their bills or maybe lovely letters to family members and loved ones.
Maybe I am just a helpless romantic like my parents but I love the way a low dresser with the attached mirror tells me how that woman felt special putting make up on and taking care of herself in front of it and sometimes it had a little accident dropping the acetone or the cream and left that mark in the finish. But don't worry, here at Gre-Stuff we try to offer great pieces in the best condition possible.
And while we are all just different, one thing is for sure; we are all happy to be vintage and Mid Century Modern collectors! Tell us about yourself…

Mid Century Modern furniture in commercials and shows

It is amazing to me how in the past few years the popularity of the Mid Century Modern furniture has grown so much that they are essential for the filming industry. Is not only clear that they are attractive pieces but also versatile to fit any kind of décor and imagination. I have seen very different commercials and even infomercials with great pieces that made me think that their lines are so clean and interesting that if someone wanted to pair them up with any other style they would still go well and rock.
In the Progressive commercial named “Flo time” which you can see on the following link http://www.progressive.com/commercials/flotime.aspx you can clearly notice a Knoll Saarinen fiberglass tulip chair that she is sitting on and in the background a Barcelona chair.
In the Cesar dog food commercial, everything is Vintage on the background from the lawn chair to the coat hanger near the door. In the Campbells kettle soup commercial at the end, the couple seats on a Bertoia dining set. In one of the Maybelline commercials one of the girls is sitting on a green Herman Miller upholstered fiberglass chair. In the Baileys commercial the lady is sitting on an Egg chair by Fritz Hansen. In the Direct TV commercial there is a 60's-70's dining set. On the International Delight almond joy when they are featuring the girl eating the almond joy candy behind her is a 60's-70's dining set with tulip base.
Other commercials like Xfinity, Auto trader, Arthritis medicine Cymbalta and even infomercials and shows also are using vintage pieces on their sets.
The most recent infomercials I saw where; the one for Nutrisystem which you can see by clicking on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XS5m7UArVI in which you will notice Marie Osmond and the guest Amy are sitting on two Egg chairs designed by Arne Jacobsen. And the one is a face cream infomercial that has a Isamu Noguchi for Herman Miller coffee table.
Not taking into consideration shows like Mad Men or Panam which are a clear example of how we want to bring that whole era of great style back into our lives. There are shows out there that use MCM pieces mixed in with contemporary pieces like the show What not to Wear, at each episode when they review the final looks; they are always standing in front of the mirror and to the left there is a Herman Miller Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair which is such a classic piece and an easy design to look at.
Plenty of movies have also done their fare share of MCM pieces on their sets even if they are not trying to portrait that period of time, so let’s keep paying attention as the popularity of vintage grows and let’s keep collecting fabulous designed pieces with great functionality for ever and ever!
