Ghosts

I sometimes feel like I’m intruding on ghosts when I enter a home that is liquidating its furnishings.  From the bedroom to the basement exciting vintage pieces that were collected over a life time call out to me to save them from the shadows so that they may shine again.  They want to be appreciated again and at the same time the memory of ghosts says “leave them.”  But I won’t listen to them.
I see the great anchoring dynamic of the home crumble as I dismantle the memories of a lifetime. The ghosts are probably upset as these great pieces exit the home to live and shine again. And shine they will for another 50 years plus.  And the ghosts; I release you, go to your rest.

This holiday season change the look!

I read in a magazine that you can change certain small and medium pieces on your living room without changing too much in order to refresh the look of your place. So I suggest that this holiday season you create a new living room to have family and friends over with style and functionality and above all a new look for your home. Here are some ideas on what small changes to make.

1.       Art: if you have had a piece of art in your living room for a while and everybody in your circle has seen it, change it with a new one.  Put the old one in a hallway, entryway, guest room, etc. you don’t have to get rid of it just introduce a new piece and give the room a different look.

2.       Coffee table: if your coffee table has been there for all the parties change it for a new one; you can change the look by switching the shape or color (wood tone) of the coffee table.

3.       Rugs, Curtains and throws: are very easy ways to add color, change the tone of the room with festive motif and give it an updated look.

4.       Accessories: Introduce a center piece accessory that will call the attention of everyone and pull the room together. It might be a nice vase, a globe on the coffee table, a small interesting box, an ashtray, a stool that would also serve as additional sitting / table if you need it to.

5.       Lighting: people don’t think about changing the lighting in their home but this is a way to really give it a different look without much effort. Not only the shape of the piece will get every ones attention but it can set the mood of the entire party and it can highlight the accents that will pull the room together.

Don't forget we have everything you need for making your home stylish and functional this holiday season. From barware, serving wear, china, lighting, rugs, furniture and accessories you can give a new look to your entire home and be proud to share it with family and friends for the holidays. Cheers!

Blond furniture

Almost every big name company has produced blond furniture during their lifetime in business. Especially during the years of 1950-1970, well known companies like Conant Ball, Brown Saltman, Heywood Wakefield, Temple Stuart, etc manufactured furniture pieces with innovative design and with an almost united theme of light color wood.

And yes, while some used ash and others used maple, they all wanted to give to the public stylish pieces that were easy to fit into any home and easy to look at without overwhelming and crowding each room.
As you have seen on every existing website that sells Mid Century Modern out there the surviving blond pieces of the period have made an impression on the hearts of the collectors and now are being appreciated once again. So if you are a blond furniture lover here are some options for you. If you need more information on these pieces please check www.gre-stuff.com.

Get the look!

Don't we all love the way the designers make every room look great by combining colors, shapes and patterns? We often see in magazines or tv shows great solutions to update your home by adding vintage pieces and updating their look by refin...ishing or reupholstering them. This is one favorite trick that interior designers use to create a unique, elegant and stylish room. I recently saw in the Better Home and gardens Refresh summer 2013 edition this awesome, fresh look. And isn't it great when we have an inspirational idea and the resources to achieve the same final results? Of course it is! That is why I felt so happy when I saw the picture and realized that we can provide the concept and the vintage pieces needed to get this look!
And in fact have two options for you to choose from:
Option #1 Two very similar chairs (pictures 1 and 2) that can be reupholstered in the same fabric to create a matching look with the added bonus of having minor differences that will create even more interest to the overall look.
Option #2 Two matching chairs, that already have the same color, that are in great condition and are ready to incorporate to your design and you can add some pillows or other accents to match you home décor.

Make sure it Fits!

This blog is not only to help you with some guidelines for collecting MCM pieces but also to make sure whatever you are buying it will fit on your home. I have had a couple of times where customers don’t ask any questions and end up wanting to return their items due to “it doesn’t fit on my space” or “it doesn’t go with my décor”. To avoid any waste of time and money on your part here are some guidelines to help you choose the right piece. 1. Be clear on what style of furniture or accessories you would like for your home. 2. Think about which colors you would like to see. 3. Before buying think about if the shape goes with the large pieces you already have. 4. Have a plan in mind and sketch the room out with the placement of the pieces you already have and want to buy together. 5. Ask questions about size, inside and outside dimensions, height, weight, etc. Online sellers like me rather have someone asking measurements and not having stuff returned. 6. If you can’t see details on the pictures; ask for close ups and other angle pictures. 7. Make sure the item can be brought from the outside to the inside. 8. Make sure it will make turns and / or bring it upstairs if needed. 9. Check the windows of the room where the piece is going to; maybe you can bring it in by taking the window out, without any demolition of course! 10. Measure the doors that the piece has to go through, yes all of them! 11. If there is a tight entrance to your community and large trucks cannot make the turn in; make sure you inform the seller before buying the piece not afterwards. 12. If there is an elevator, loading dock or anything similar in your community or building; make sure to tell the seller. 13. You can make a template in paper or cardboard to scale to give you an idea of the size of lamps, art, chairs and small pieces of furniture like bookcases or cabinets. 14. And lastly make sure you schedule some strong friends to help you bring it in when it arrives. We hope these guidelines will help you choose the right pieces to create a wonderful space that will reflect your style and taste but most importantly that it will help you create a space that you will be proud of and you can enjoy of surrounded by friends and family.

Interesting Fact about MCM

Did you know that Paul McCobb was born in Medford MA? During his career he was better known for his furniture designs but in his first few years as a designer he also designed radios and televisions for CBS-Columbia, Hi-Fi Consoles for Bell & Howell, along with other household items. His Planner Group, manufactured by Winchendon Furniture Company, was among the best selling contemporary furniture lines of the 1950s and was in continuous production from 1949 until 1964.
